Politician Caught in a Lie—So What’s New?
True, there is nothing new about politicians lying. It happens every day. But I take this occasion to comment on a current event because I am intending to soon commence an occasional column on my website—probably on the home page—concerning the importance of words. Yes, even tiny words like prepositions can be critical. Well-educated individuals—especially lawyers, such as Richard Blumenthal—understand very precisely how the tiniest words can make the difference between truth and lies, truth and deception, good and evil. In this case, the difference between the prepositions “in” and “during.”
Richard Blumenthal is Connecticut’s Democrat Attorney General who is running for the U. S. Senate seat being vacated by “Mr. Bailout Flunky,” Sen. Christopher Dodd. On a number of occasions Blumenthal has stated publicly that he “served in Vietnam.” Here is an example discovered and posted by Blumenthal’s Senate seat opponent, Linda McMahon: http://surchur.com/all/blumenthal (link is no longer valid). The New York Times was tipped to the story and (surprisingly) published the facts regarding his military record in their online edition on the evening of May 17th. Blumenthal’s campaign staff quickly arranged a news conference to try to prevent major damage to his campaign.
With a backdrop of veterans, Blumenthal then admitted that he “misspoke.” He actually served in the Reserves during Vietnam, and in fact, received five deferments which kept him out of Vietnam. A slip of the tongue is understandable—we have all have done that. But when one “misspeaks” on numerous occasions, it is not a slip of the tongue but rather it is a willful attempt to deceive.
We agree with former Sen. Fred Thompson unapologetic assessment when, this morning on Fox News, he stated the obvious truth—that Blumenthal is “a weasely liar.” Blumenthal, in his “apology” news conference, stated that he wasn’t going to let anyone “impugn his service record” because of a “few” misstatements. Excuse me? Mr. Blumenthal, your lies have already impugned your record. No one else is doing anything except revealing your deception. It brings to mind King David’s assessment of Doeg the Edomite.
Psalm 52:2 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
3 Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness.
The biblical Edomites were the descendants of Esau who became (and still are) Israel’s enemies. Doeg was the evil King Saul’s political hatchet man—literally! He went forth under the color of law (Saul’s decree) and executed an entire village of priests and their families in vengeance against David.
